Last week, I went tree planting at Keep Durham Beautiful (Hillside Park). Something that I learned about the park is that Hillside Park High School did not have 12th grade until 1937, when it was introduced as a vocational training grade throughout the 1940s. I learned how to plant a tree with my friends. First, my group had to shovel out a hole in the ground to make a base. Then, we put the tree inside. We had to separate the roots so the tree could grow freely and not in a circle. Then, we covered the tree with dirt and sprinkled mulch on the surface. Finally, I put a plastic shield in the tree to protect it. My group named the tree Fredrick (pronounced Fridrick). I love tree planting!
